Fogged Glass and Failed Insulated Glass Units

Have you been noticing foggy condensation between your glass panes?  That condensation is a sign that your window’s insulated glass units have failed.  If you have questions or don’t know where to turn, Glass Doctor® Dearborn Heights is an expert in insulated glass unit failure.

What is an insulated glass unit?

Most modern homes were built with insulated glass units in the windows.  These windows contain two, or sometimes three, panes of glass with vacuum or a gas like argon sealed between the glass layers to produce a barrier from the outside elements.  This glass unit is much more energy efficient than a single pane of glass.  It also reduces unwanted noise and uncomfortable hot or cold areas near your windows.

What causes them to fail?

The seal is what fails on these window units, releasing the gas or argon and allowing air transfer.  This moist air inside your window panes is what causes the foggy or milky look inside your windows.  This condition greatly decreases your windows’ energy efficiency as well as blocking your view.

Often the seals fail because they were poorly manufactured using sealants that break down or other construction flaws.  Sometimes it is from poor installation.  A tweak or bang in the wrong location can start a small gap that grows over time.  Extreme temperatures are also guilty of breaking down your window’s sealant prematurely.

Do I have to replace the window?

Most of the time, we can remove the failed unit and replace with a quality sealed glass unit while keeping the frame and hardware of your existing window.  Glass replacement rather than window replacement has several benefits:

  • You don’t have to do them all at once.  Replace the glass units as they fail and save your budget from taking the major blow of whole house window replacement.

  • Less mess and hassle.  Replacing windows is time-consuming and causes additional needed repairs to your home.  Often siding, window wraps, interior trim, drywall and paint, and other surfaces need to be restored after a window replacement.  With glass replacement, much of this is unnecessary as the window frame remains in place.

  • It’s fast.  Insulated glass units can be replaced in hours rather than days or weeks.

  • Extend the life of your windows.  With a quality insulated glass unit replacement, you can extend the useable life of your windows indefinitely.

  • It saves you money.  It is obvious that less time spent replacing and fewer surfaces disturbed means less cost to you.  The glass units are guaranteed to last also.  You won’t have to perform this repair over and over.

  • Upgrades are available.  Maybe you’re still considering replacement windows because you want to change the look or style of your windows.  Maybe you want to improve your windows’ energy efficiency.  Many of these options are available with glass replacement.

Of course, sometimes deteriorated frames or other factors make window replacement a better choice.  Glass Doctor® Dearborn Heights can help you with that as well.
